J.Lindeberg’s Creative Director Departs Brand

J.Lindeberg has parted ways with its creative director.
Jens Werner, who has been in charge of the design of the Sweden-based men’s label for the past two years, has exited the brand, WWD has learned. The veteran of Adidas and Tory Burch joined J.Lindeberg in fall 2016. For the first year, he was the design director of Sport and Fashion for the label and was elevated in November 2017 to creative director for the entire line. His first collection was for spring 2019.
Werner was brought on board by Stefan Engstrom, a minority owner, who had been chief executive officer at that time. Today, the ceo is Jonas Andersson, who was elevated to that role in December 2018. Andersson, who has been with J.Lindeberg for over seven years, did not respond to requests for comment on Monday about a successor for Werner.
Werner said Andersson is working to reposition the brand, and as a result, their visions did not mesh.
Werner said he had been working to “reshape the brand image and product, drive international awareness, and create new attraction. My brand concept, future archive, has aimed to explain the brand’s history and iconic archive, and my vision for its future. Spread over five

Jonathan Anderson Named Director of Loewe’s Board of Directors

BOARD GAME: Jonathan Anderson’s role at Loewe is no longer limited to the creative side of things. The designer has been appointed director of the company’s board of directors, Bernard Kuhn, general counsel for LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, said at the group’s annual general meeting Thursday. Sidney Toledano has been named the board’s chairman. The Madrid-based house falls under his purview in his role as executive chairman of LVMH Fashion Group.
The news comes on the heels of a wide-ranging reshuffle at the group which, in November, appointed Pietro Beccari as chief executive officer of Christian Dior Couture, succeeding Toledano.
Anderson joined the Spanish leather goods firm in 2013, bringing a strong fashion injection to the house, with former Céline executive Pascale Lepoivre coming on board as ceo in September 2016.
His runway debut at Loewe, a brand that dates back to 1846, came one year after LVMH took a 46 percent stake in his London-based signature label J.W. Anderson.

Toms Hires John Whitledge as Creative Director

Toms has hired John Whitledge as creative director.
The give-back brand — founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie with a singular shoe style — will look to expand its aesthetic repertoire beyond the Whole Foods and hiking set.
Whitledge, cofounder of the Trovata fashion brand — which won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2005 — aims to reinvigorate Toms men’s assortment and shoe designs. His influence at Toms will first be seen for the spring season. Whitledge is to continue his work on Trovata as well.
“Our goal is to elevate design, product and storytelling to match the commitment we have emphasized with giving,” Whitledge said. “If we can re-create that focus and enthusiasm, then the sky’s the limit. Our approach for spring 2018 was to remove anything that wasn’t providing an emotional connection within the team. This allowed us to take some bold steps in materials we used, compelling outsole executions, and introducing signature details to create a cohesive collection.”

Armie Hammer’s Call Me By Your Name Director Breaks Down the Film’s Intimate Peach Scene

Working together for the first time on the sultry love story Call Me By Your NameArmie Hammer and director Luca Guadagnino got along like peaches and cream.

“I probably fell in love with Luca the same way Elio fell in love with Oliver. I looked at him with amazement,” Hammer revealed in OUT Magazine’s November cover story.

Guadagnino, who directed 2015’s A Bigger Splash, agreed, saying, “I fell in love with Armie when I saw him in The Social Network. And then I had the privilege of meeting him, and I fell in love again. And I’ve never recovered from falling in love with him.”

The mutual admiration and trust between director and actor was important on Call Me By Your Name, which Hammer said forced him outside of his comfort zone. Based on André Aciman’s 2007 novel of the same name, the film tells the story of a grad student (Hammer) who falls in love with his professor’s son, played by Timothée Chalamet.

RELATED: Armie Hammer Calls Out James Woods for Slamming Gay Movie Romance: You Dated a ’19-Year-Old When You Were 60′

Guadagnino and Chalamet also found themselves on the same page creatively. For example, in one memorable scene from the novel, Chalamet’s character makes love to a pitted peach. Guadagnino had reservations about including the scene in his script: “I was struggling with the possibility that you can masturbate yourself with such a fruit,” he explained.

“So I grabbed a peach and I tried, and I have to say — it works,” he said, adding, “I went to Timothée, and said, ‘We shoot the scene, because I tried it and it worked.’ And he said, ‘I tried, too, and I already knew it worked.’ ”

The anecdote is just one example of the close relationship both actors forged with their director. “I’ve never been so intimately involved with a director before,” Hammer admitted. “Luca was able to look at me and completely undress me. He knew every single one of my insecurities, every time I needed to be pushed, and when I needed to be protected.”

For Hammer, challenging himself with the part was ultimately a freeing experience. “So much of this movie is about stripping everything away and exposing yourself,” he explained. “I grew up in conservative white America, where you just don’t talk about yourself, your desires, wanting to express your sensuality — it’s taboo. To be fully immersed in Luca’s world was just an incredible gift.”

Call Me By Your Name hits theaters Nov. 24.

Ciongoli to Exit Eidos as Creative Director

Antonio K. Ciongoli, cofounder and creative director of Eidos, the more fashion-forward division of Isaia, is leaving the brand after this season to launch his own collection.
Ciongoli, who has designed the collection for four-and-a-half years, will stay on through the end of this season and retain his equity stake in the label.
“Building Eidos has been a life-changing experience for me and I cannot thank Gianluca Isaia and Jim Shay [Isaia’s U.S. president] enough for the opportunity to do so,” he said. “While moving on from anything one cares about is difficult, I am optimistic about Eidos’ potential and I look forward to watching its future evolution,” Ciongoli said.
He declined to provide details about his next project at this point, saying he would unveil weekly updates via his Instagram account.
“In the last six years, I have seen the retail landscape change dramatically. The value in today’s market is the opportunity to connect directly with the people to whom our product speaks, and I’m interested in creating an immersive, content-driven platform that expands that dialogue.”
Isaia launched the brand in fall 2013 as a lower-priced tailored clothing and furnishings collection. It has since been expanded to a complete lifestyle offering. Eidos is now

Gents Acquired by Ridge Capital Partners, Wendell Brown to Be Creative Director

Ridge Capital Partners has acquired a majority stake in Gents Co., a men’s brand that got its start in 2012 selling luxury baseball caps.
Terms were not disclosed.
Gents will be led by managing partner Ryan Fishoff. Non Executive Director

Non Executive Director

Non Executive Directors used to be caricatured as cronies of the Chairman (who is also a Non Executive Director) or CEO. Fat cats, freeloading members of the “old boy network”, retirees who wanted to have somewhere to go other than the golf club for a decent lunch and a chat. Not an attractive scenario and for various reasons, but not least because of numerous serious corporate scandals where shareholders were left unprotected, the whole can of Non Executive worms has been subject to investigation, reappraisal and some rigorous new rulings. Most people have heard the term Non Executive Director without actually knowing what they are, much less what they can potentially do for a start-ups or growing business. A well chosen Non Executive director can be key to good governance but getting that first Non Executive Director appointment can be tricky.

ModCloth Taps Lizz Wasserman as First Fashion Director

ModCloth, the retro-minded e-tailer that in January brought on Matt Kaness as chief executive officer, has just hired its first fashion director.
Lizz Wasserman, who is based in Los Angeles and will work out of ModCloth’s office there, will report to Kaness and co-founder and chief creative officer Susan Koger, who are both based in the brand’s San Francisco headquarters. Wasserman will create seasonal collections for ModCloth’s line of branded apparel, which was introduced in August.
Wasserman, who studied sociology at the University of Wisconsin, has spent time at brands like Free People and Urban Outfitters, and was most recently Global Creative Director at 20th Century Fox Film.
“Her expertise will be invaluable as we grow our namesake label into a true ‘collection’ of high-quality pieces that are joyous, whimsical and make you feel your best,” Koger said.
Wasserman said that she was drawn to ModCloth’s supportive community and its vintage DNA, and described her aesthetic as “simpler silhouettes in beautiful prints and easy fabrics, with standout pieces.”
In this newly created role, Wasserman will “have an immediate impact on our product narratives, visual concepts and overall brand storytelling,” said Kaness, who also spent time at Urban Outfitters (although the two did not work there

Annette Worsley-Taylor, Former Creative Director of London Fashion Week, Dies at 71

LONDON — Annette Worsley-Taylor, a former creative director of London Fashion Week who helped reignite global interest in British fashion, died this week at the age of 71. The cause of her death was lung cancer, a British Fashion Council spokesman said.
Worsley-Taylor was a driving force in establishing London Fashion Week. After launching the New Wave exhibition at London’s Ritz Hotel in 1974, in order to introduce young British designers to the international market, she went on to found London Designer Collections in 1975. After establishing the collections, the executive went on to win funding from the British government’s Department of Trade and Industry, to support a newly formed British Fashion Council. After that, Worsley-Taylor established the London Designer Show in 1990, which the BFC called a “prototype” for London Fashion Week in its current form.
A combination of the seemingly scatty yet surprisingly steely, the tireless Worsley-Taylor was an integral part of the renaissance of London fashion in the early Eighties when the likes of BodyMap, Katharine Hamnett, Betty Jackson and, later, Rifat Özbek and John Galliano put the British capital back on the global fashion map as their shows became must-sees for international retailers. She remained a champion of

‘Look Of Silence’ Director On How The Film Is Sparking Change In Indonesia

Joshua Oppenheimer‘s 2013 documentary “The Act of Killing“ detailed the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s, which has been estimated to have claimed the lives of about half a million people. Now Oppenheimer is back with a follow-up film called “The Look Of Silence,” which is enabling Indonesians to finally address horrors their country has yet to recover from.

“‘The Look Of Silence’ has, I’m humbled to say, helped catalyze a fundamental transformation in how Indonesians are responding to the genocide and its present day terrible legacy of corruption, fear and violence,” Oppenheimer told HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd on  Thursday. “It’s helped energize a movement for truth and reconciliation and some form of justice.”

Truth and reconciliation legislation would help bring closure to many Indonesians. But the documentary takes a different approach to exposing the genocide.

“The Look Of Silence” follows one family of survivors’ tragic discovery of how their son was murdered in 1965 and who his killers were. The film documents the family’s youngest son, Adi, as he confronts his brother’s killers. Oppenheimer explained the effect the documentary is having in the country at its center.

“Indonesians through the film are acknowledging how torn the social fabric of the country is, and how urgently truth and reconciliation are needed,” Oppenheimer said. “And the government, in response to this debate the film has raised, has now introduced a truth and reconciliation bill. Woefully inadequate, but a tremendous start in a way.”

Watch Oppenheimer discuss his moving documentary in the video above, and click here to watch his full HuffPost Live conversation.

When it comes to building her wardrobe, Aï Bihr certainly has a lot of options. As Steven Alan’s creative director, Bihr has a whole store’s worth of goodies right at her fingertips — and is in the enviable position of being able to actually create exactly the kind of garment she’d like to wear. And if that wasn’t enough to make you wish you were in her shoes, Bihr speaks multiple languages, has lived in Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York, holds degrees in both neuroscience and pattern-making. Here, she gives us the scoop on what she wears to work.

Test Market

On a work day, I try to wear mostly Steven Alan because it’s good for me to wear what we’ve made; if we need to improve something or if something’s not working great, then I know it. I love to wear a big Steven Alan shirt — I usually get something a bit oversize. So I’ll wear a men’s extra-large reverse seam in white, with a pair of jeans we’ve made. I also have a lot of old Levi’s because I collect a lot of denim. I love a 501, but I like to buy a big men’s size and then cut the legs so they’re kind of wide and cropped. I go to a lot of vintage stores to hunt for them; when I lived in Paris I went every weekend to look at the flea markets. I’m also a big vintage eyewear collector and have really loved designing the Steven Alan Optical collection.

On my feet, I usually have sneakers or oxfords. Or like, a penny loafer. My whole team knows I’m addicted to these Japanese high tops called Shoes Like Pottery. I wear them constantly, year round. I don’t want to be boring, but I always look the same! Even if there’s a corporate event or I have to make a presentation, I always look the same. I try to stay very consistent and have been very consistent for a long time. I’ve always worn a lot of jumpsuits–whatever brand I go to, I make jumpsuits for them. They’re kind of great because they’re so versatile. You can even tie the sleeves at the waist and they make really great pants that way. I have a nice collection of vintage jumpsuits, some from the Yves Saint Laurent Safari collection, and I’ll wear those tied at the waist or zip them up and belt them. And if I’m wearing a jumpsuit like that I might add a little heeled sandal. Maryam Nassir Zadeh makes beautiful shoes. If I do go to a party and I feel like wearing something a little bit different I’ll put on sandals from Maryam. One of my best friends, Mona, designs A Détacher and she makes really beautiful skirts and dresses. I recently bought an indigo skirt/culotte thing from her. It’s the perfect length and so good for summer parties.

Dress for the Seasons

When the weather is this hot and humid, I love to wear linen and cotton poplin. We have these really great cotton poplin wide trousers from Steven Alan called the Picnic Pant. When you wear a wide-leg trouser like that, it’s nice to wear something small on top. You can’t wear something too big, or else you look like a tent. It’s also a great pant to wear with a linen T-shirt.

In the fall, I’m usually in a suit. I’ll wear a suit jacket and a pair of trousers, with a T-shirt and sneakers. I have a few different jacket styles that I really like–one is a schoolboy that’s a bit smaller; The Row makes a really nice one every year. And then I like a boyfriend notched lapel in tropical wool; it’s actually the first jacket I made for Steven Alan when I joined the company and it’s still my go-to. I also always love to have a peak lapel double-breasted blazer. I think the key to pulling off a suit is–well, first of all you just really have to find the right suit for you. But then you also have to have a more casual element in your accessories or what you’re wearing the suit with, like a T-shirt and sneakers.

Quality Control

When I’m shopping for myself, I always look at the finishing of the garment. I’m looking on the inside, not just the outside, examining the fabric, rubbing it on my neck and doing all the crazy things that designers do. You want to make sure there’s a clean finish–basically, that you don’t see all this thread wrapped around the seam–so that it doesn’t look like things are going to snag. It’s good to pay attention to these kinds of things, because they’re going to dictate the longevity of the garment. And really touch the fabric. Customers aren’t stupid, they know when they’re feeling good fabric. This is why we choose to use really good fabric at Steven Alan, because our customers are smart. They know they’re not getting garbage from us. That’s one thing I’m really proud of: There’s no room for poor quality. I’m really proud to say that more than 90 percent of the things I make are made in New York. And if it’s not made here, it’s made at the best factory in Japan.

RBG Says Natalie Portman ‘Insisted’ On Female Director For Biopic

Natalie Portman reportedly refused to sign on to the upcoming Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic until it had a female director.

Portman is set to play the Supreme Court justice in “On the Basis of Sex,” which will chronicle Ginsburg’s early days as a lawyer.

In conversation with California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu at this year’s American Constitution Society convention on June 13, Ginsburg revealed that that Portman was adamant a women direct the movie, putting the project on pause.

“Natalie Portman came to talk to me about this, and we had a very good conversation,” Ginsburg said. “And one thing interesting that she insisted on, it held up the project for awhile. She said, ‘I want the director to be a woman. There are not enough women in this industry. There are many talented [women] out there.’ And now they do have a woman director.”

In May, it was reported that Marielle Heller, director of “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” is currently in talks to direct the movie, though the director of the film has not been formally announced.

Beyond pushing for more women calling the shots, Portman discussed the need for more dynamic female narratives with Elle UK in 2013: “The fallacy in Hollywood is that if you’re making a ‘feminist’ story, the woman kicks ass and wins. That’s not feminist, that’s macho. A movie about a weak, vulnerable woman can be feminist if it shows a real person that we can empathize with.”

(Though we can all agree that Notorious R.B.G. totally kicks ass.)

Portman recently directed her first feature film, “A Tale of Love and Darkness,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

‘Bravetown’ Director Tells Why Latin Americans Can Relate To Theme Of Losing Family To War

Daniel Duran has made a name for himself directing music videos for some the world’s biggest Latin stars. Now, the 35-year-old Venezuelan-born director has combined his passion for music with a dramatic script for his first feature film, “Bravetown.”

Duran’s directorial debut focuses on 17-year-old New York City teen Josh Harvest (Lucas Till, “X-Men: First Class”), who is a troubled but talented DJ sent to spend time with his estranged father (Josh Duhamel) after an accidental drug overdose. As Josh arrives to deal with his own family problems, he begins to realize that residents of the small Army town in North Dakota are struggling to come to terms with losing many of their loved ones to war.

“Bravetown” also includes performances by Kherington Payne (“Fame”) and Oscar-nominated actress Laura Dern (“Wild”), as a clinically depressed mother unable to cope with the loss of her son.

Duran recently discussed the film with The Huffington Post via email. He opened up about how his relationship with his father connects him to the film, and how many Latin Americans can identify with the movie’s theme of losing loved ones to violence.

daniel duran
Director Daniel Duran (left) and actor Josh Duhamel on the set of “Bravetown.”

You were born and raised in Venezuela. How did you end up doing a film that deals with topics like the trauma of returning war veterans and how a town in middle America is dealing losing loved ones to war?

From the start, the theme was something I felt was very universal because it’s a story about a DJ that has these personal and family problems — problems that affect anyone in the world, from any nationality — and that was my main focus.

I think when you deal with conflicts concerning family, love, heartbreak, father-son relationships, they’re topics that anyone can identify with and that’s where I got hooked in this project. Plus, the movie is charged with music and I come from that world with my music video [background]. It was easy for me to understand Josh’s musical world and how he used music to deal with the whirlwind of emotions he was living. It is a movie that exists in a totally American world, but at the same time it touches upon very universal themes.

How did you feel personally connected to the story?

I feel I connected with the emotions. I also come from a family with separated parents, in which I didn’t have a relationship with my father. The difference is that Josh experienced that as a teenager, and for me it was imagining what that relationship would’ve been like. But unlike Josh, my relationship with my mother has always been spectacular and I never had the type of issues he had [with his mom.]

On the other hand, I felt I identified with Josh’s musical connection as a DJ because music has always been present in my life and in my creations. One of the things I’ve always liked is to talk to young people and I feel that his movie connects with teens, because despite it being a very mature story, it is seen from their point of view.

What kind of obstacles did you face while working on “Bravetown?”

This was my first film and it was a big cast. I think my first obstacle was how to face that challenge and the insecurity I had at one point about being able to succeed. Having English be my second language was also a big obstacle, to think that at some point I wasn’t going to be able to communicate exactly what I wanted. Thank God I had the proper words to be able to express what I wanted to the crew and cast, to be able to steer the wheel of this boat.

Back to the theme of losing loved ones to war and how you deal with that, there are plenty of people in Latin America who can relate to what it’s like to lose someone to violence.

Perhaps in Latin American countries we don’t lose soldiers, but we have a high percentage of deaths caused by crime. That’s a kind of war with which we’ve have to deal. I think that people from other countries will identify with “Bravetown,” because it’s that feeling of losing a loved one to violence that creates wounds that are difficult to heal. And how you face that loss, that is the important point of the movie.

What was it like working with Laura Dern, who recently was nominated for the Oscar for “Wild”?

Laura is a true lady and working with her was incredible — a delight. I learned a lot from her. For me it was an experience to create that character with her because it was written one way and when we sat down to talk, we gave it a different tone. That’s the magic that happens when you work with someone with her talent.

This was your first film, but what can we expect from you in the future?

I want to continue telling great stories and entertaining. Right now I’m focused on closing the chapter with “Bravetown,” but I am starting to read and write ideas. But I don’t know what’s coming yet.

And now that you are closing the chapter, how do you feel about your first film?

I feel very happy, excited and enthusiastic about people seeing my first project. I think it was an incredible project with an excellent cast. … I [also] had the opportunity to work with my director of photography Angel Berroeta — who has been with me since my music videos and with pride I can say he’s from Maracay, Venezuela — Salvadorian writer Oscar Torres, Argentine production designer Tomas Voth, Venezuelan composer Angelo Milli. You could say this was a movie made by Latinos for Americans, and that makes me very proud.

“Bravetown” will be in select theaters beginning on Friday, May 8.

CORRECTION: This article has been edited to correct the reference to Laura Dern, who has been nominated for Oscars twice, but has not won.

DKNY Could Be Looking for a New Creative Director

DKNY CREATIVE HEAD: Could DKNY be looking for a new creative director? Industry sources say a search is on for a person to head the design team at the label, which is owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Caroline Brown, chief executive officer of Donna Karan International, is said to be tapping into the young designer market to come up with a candidate for the role. Public School, Prabal Gurung and Andrea Lieberman, designer of A.L.C., are among the names that have been bandied about. Lieberman had no comment, as did Gurung and a spokeswoman for DKI. Asked whether he was considering the position, Maxwell Osborne, design partners with Dao-Yi Chow in Public School, said, “not at this moment,” adding that they have enough going on with their own line. Jane Chung is the longtime executive vice president of design at DKNY.

Solange Knowles Marries Video Director Alan Ferguson

NEW YORK (AP) — Solange Knowles is known for her fashion as much as her music, and her weekend wedding didn’t disappoint.

Her publicist confirmed Sunday that the 28-year-old singer (and sister of Beyonce) wed 51-year-old video director Alan Ferguson over the weekend. The bride and groom both wore ivory, a color also worn by key attendees, including the bride’s mother, Tina; brother-in-law Jay Z and niece Blue Ivy.

This is the second marriage for Knowles, who has a 10-year-old son, Daniel. She told Vogue that the nuptials, in New Orleans, were a labor of love.

Knowles made headlines earlier this year when leaked video footage showed her attacking Jay-Z, with Beyonce standing nearby. The trio told The Associated Press in a statement the incident was “unfortunate” but they stressed they loved each other.

‘Women In Comedy’ Director Heidi Ewing Discusses The ‘Pretty Isn’t Funny’ Stereotype

Women have always been funny, but it wasn’t until recently that society allowed them to look beautiful and make us laugh.

Filmmaker Heidi Ewing, who directed the documentary “MAKERS: Women in Comedy,” dropped by HuffPost Live on Tuesday to discuss her work on the history of funny females, and she spoke with host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani about the long-held concern among women comics that an attractive appearance would make it harder to win over an audience.

Lucky for comedy lovers, that stereotype is quickly dissipating thanks to hilarious women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and many more who aren’t afraid to rock a glamorous gown while they rattle off punchlines.

Watch Ewing discuss the “pretty isn’t funny” stereotype in the video above, and see the full HuffPost Live conversation here.

‘Golden Boy’ Director Slams Sharon Stone, Says Her Demands ‘Bordered On Ridiculousness’

Italian director Pupi Avati knew he wanted Sharon Stone to star in his film, “Golden Boy.” What he didn’t know, he told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview on Friday, is how difficult it would be to work with her.

Avati told The Hollywood Reporter that he was thrilled that Stone agreed to act in the low-budget project, until Stone’s reps reportedly reached out with a lengthy list of demands.

“It was a negotiation that bordered on ridiculousness, concerning embarrassing details, as if Italy was a third world country. By the way, we do have electricity in Italy,” he said.

The director claimed Stone’s antics didn’t end there, either. According to Avati, when Stone saw a television crew and photographers filming a scene, she allegedly left the set unannounced.

“Then my brother [Antonio Avati] received a phone call from Los Angeles from her manager. She wouldn’t come back on the set until the photographers and especially that damned TV cameramen had gone away. Obviously we did so and she, like nothing happened, shot the scene. The thing that I found most absurd is that she had to call to the States and to close herself in a car, instead of coming to ask us directly,” Avati said.

“None of this is true,” a representative for Stone told HuffPost Entertainment in an email. “Ms. Stone is the consummate professional.”

This isn’t the first time someone has alluded to Stone being difficult to work with. In a scathing 2010 piece for Deadline.com, Nikki Finke, the site’s former editor-in-chief, slammed the actress for her on-set behavior.

For more on Avati’s complaints about Stone, read the full interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

MEXICAN DIRECTOR AMAT ESCALANTE SPEAKS ABOUT BEING ON MARTIN SCORSESE’S JURY IN MARRAKECH

“I came because of Martin Scorsese,” Mexican director Amat Escalante said, explaining his reason for accepting a position as member of the jury at the Marrakesh International Film Festival, which will choose the winning Competition film this evening.

Escalante, the winner of the Best Director award at Cannes last season, was delighted that Martin Scorsese, president of the jury, had seen and liked two of his films, and moreover, seemed to know them “in photographic detail,” discussing them shot for shot with the younger director here in Marrakech. It was an honor to receive such enthusiastic appraisal from an esteemed veteran like Scorsese, Escalante told us.

“Being on the jury with Scorsese is great,” he added. “He is a good listener. He listens openly to our opinions. Listening to him discuss the films, I learn a lot too.”

It was also interesting to be on this jury for Escalante because everyone has “their own opinion, their own criteria. A film will touch one jury member for personal reasons, but not another.”

2013-12-07-bamat1.JPG

What were Escalante’s own criteria for choosing a good film?

“I like a film that will take me forwards and keep my interest, make me curious about what will happens next. I like a film with suspense.”

In his own films, he noted, he makes an effort “to make exceptional things happen—like people dying”—since “reality can be pretty boring.” Escalante’s own favorite movies are genre films, like Westerns and horror flicks.

Does it ever get stressful, trying to come up with a consensus with ten people?

“No,” laughed Escalante. “It’s after all just a movie.”

As for trends that Escalante–who has been on five juries in the last couple years—sees in contemporary films, he joked: “Well, there is a lot of vomit. Yellow vomit even.”

But on a more serious note, Escalante pointed out that social issues were at the forefront of the films he has seen.

His own masterful film Heli, which earned him Best Director award at Cannes, is the story of vulnerable bystanders getting in the way of a drug cartel in Mexico, with a much discussed graphic torture scene at the climax, including a penis burnt to a crisp. The film, he told us now, has been very appreciated in Mexico, as Mexicans know the reality of which the film speaks.

“Are you as hopeless about the future as your film?” a journalist asked.

“No,” Escalante leaned forward. ” Everything can change. It can change in Mexico. What is frustrating is that change is not allowed. The media has numbed and stupefied everybody so they will follow governmental orders. Two channels in Mexico basically control the country: control who will run for president, what people are going to buy. Even soap operas deliver messages. For example, now the president wants to privatize gas. So we have a soap opera star talking about how it would be good to sell petrol. If Mexico could be liberated from this media control, that would be a revolution.”
