Hilfiger’s TommyNow Show at the Apollo Theater Marks Return to New York

After traveling the world, Tommy Hilfiger is bringing its TommyNow fashion show back to New York.
On Sept. 8, the company will showcase the fall 2019 Tommy x Zendaya collaborative collection, codesigned by Tommy Hilfiger and global brand ambassador Zendaya, at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. The choice of the Apollo Theater confirms a WWD report on Jan. 8.
The show is expected to continue the themes of inclusion, diversity and empowerment that Hilfiger and Zendaya brought to the TommyNow runway show in Paris for spring 2019. That runway show, which paid homage to the 1973 French-U.S. “Battle of Versailles,” featured an all-black cross-generational cast including Grace Jones, Beverly Johnson, Pat Cleveland, Grace Jones, Veronica Webb, Halima Aden, Jourdan Dunn and Winnie Harlow. Roller disco dancers on an illuminated runway warmed up the crowd of more than 1,000 guests.
The Apollo show marks Hilfiger’s return to New York, having shown in the city for fall 2016. Since that initial presentation, the worldwide tour touched down in Los Angeles for spring 2017, London for fall 2017, Milan for spring 2018, Shanghai for fall 2018, and then Paris.

Proenza Schouler to Return to New York

COMING BACK: After showing on the Paris couture schedule for two seasons, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler are bringing their runway show back to New York in September. They revealed the news via Instagram.
“It’s been a fun ride showing the past two seasons in Paris during Couture (thank you Chambre Syndicale), but NY will always be home so we are coming back for spring-summer 2019. In today’s world, when, where, and how one shows can be looser and more fluid than ever and so for now, NY is our home once again. Paris was an amazing opportunity to show what we do to a completely different audience that had never been able to attend a Proenza Schouler show and on that level, as well as on a creative level, it felt really right. We want to thank everyone who was responsible for making Paris an unforgettable experience. Looking forward to heading back home now and being a part of NYFW in September, where it all began,” read the post’s caption.
McCollough and Hernandez’s departure from New York coincided with a mini-migration of buzzy American brands, including Rodarte, Thom Browne and Altuzarra, decamping for Paris last year. Thom Browne

Selma Blair, Ali Larter Help Nyakio Celebrate Return to Ron Robinson

It was a literal homecoming for Nyakio Greico this week, as the founder of natural beauty brand Nyakio returned to Ron Robinson at Fred Segal Melrose, the Los Angeles specialty retailer where she launched her line 16 years ago.
On hand at the Ali Larter and Shannon Rotenberg-hosted party was Selma Blair, who was also at the first launch party. This time she had her eight-year-old son Arthur in tow, and Greico’s two kids were also there. “Where does the time go?” laughed Blair as she tousled his hair. Blair’s then-publicist, entertainment manager Troy Nankin, was Greico’s business partner when, as a former talent assistant, decided to pivot and launch a beauty line. He was also present. “So many things happened here at Fred Segal,” he said from his perch on the brick steps beneath the iconic red, white and blue awning. Old Guard faces in the crowd like makeup artist Monica Blunder, actress Amy Smart, producer Crystal Lourd and retailer Jenny Belushi agreed.
“I remember coming here when I’d first moved to L.A. and I drove a beat-up Mazda. My friend and I would never want to leave because everyone here was so beautiful. They’d keep trying to walk

Pierre-Yves Roussel to Return as ANDAM Prize Mentor

PARIS – Pierre-Yves Roussel is no stranger to shepherding growing brands. As head of the Fashion Group at LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton for more than a decade, he helped to reinvent so-called second-tier brands, including Céline and Loewe, with new strains of creative leadership.
Having officially handed the baton to Sidney Toledano, Roussel told WWD he hopes to take “a couple of months” off to “refresh” himself before taking on a new assignment in the sprawling French group.
However, it looks like spare time may be in short supply, as ANDAM will today name the member of the executive board of LVMH as the designated mentor of this year’s winner of the main Fashion Award, succeeding Francesca Bellettini, chief executive officer of Yves Saint Laurent.
The mentorship spans two years of guidance on matters including financial, legal, marketing, communications and production. Roussel is reprising the role he held in 2012, when he advised the French-born, Tokyo-based designer Julien David.
Nathalie Dufour, ANDAM founder and director, said that now that all major luxury brands are backing the initiative, it will be asking past mentors to come back for a second turn. She noted that Roussel has been a member of the organization’s jury several

LONDON — Roland Mouret will return to London Fashion Week to mark the 20th anniversary of the brand, which is based here.
Mouret, who has been showing in Paris for the past decade, will show his fall-winter 2017 collection. His company said the February show will highlight the beginning of a year-long anniversary celebration.
“I love that London is my creative home and over half my manufacturing base is in Britain — I wouldn’t be able to do what I do anywhere else other than London. London is my home, it’s where my brand has its heart, and I’m excited to celebrate such an important milestone here,” he said.
Earlier this year, Mouret said he hoped Brexit would not impact small British manufacturers.
“It’s so difficult to predict what is going to happen, and my hope the transformation will be polite, thoughtful, and carried out with understanding. London has an amazing backbone of garment production, with small factories that offer services from A to Z,” said Mouret, adding it’s crucial those small businesses continue to flourish.

Kitson Founder Fraser Ross’ Store Window Calls for Robertson Boulevard Return

MOUTHING OFF: Fraser Ross is back to using his store windows to liven up the conversation on Robertson Boulevard.
The retailer’s latest window signage—which has historically been used to make statements on the Los Angeles street—proclaims “Make America and Robertson Great Again” in a riff on President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign slogan. However, it’s less about the winner of the presidential election and more about the retailer’s continued push to get Robertson Boulevard back on the map, Ross said.
“The window’s your platform, your stage to the world,” he said. “You might have to take some heat for it, but there’s stop and go traffic on the street and they see it. It’s your stand of what you believe in.”
Ross said he would have done a spin off Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s slogan had she won the election. Kitross has been selling Clinton and Trump merchandise—everything from socks and coloring books to playing cards and pet waste bags—in the lead up to the elections, with business continuing to be brisk, particularly with Trump merchandise, Ross said.
“It’s [about] how can I get Robertson better again?” he said. “And I think with getting the phone booth taken down [on the street], the trees trimmed,

The Sophomores: Novice Designers Talk About Their Return to NYFW

Three designers who launched their collections at New York Fashion Week in February — Gabriela Hearst, Ji Oh and Laura Vassar and Kristopher Brock, the husband-and-wife team behind Brock Collection — discuss what they learned from their first experience and what they changed for their second act.
WWD: What was the most exciting part of planning your first NYFW presentation last season?
Gabriela Hearst: It was our launch season and we’d been conceptualizing the project for more than two years, so it had been a long journey to get there. Only a few trusted key people had seen the collection so we were very excited to finally show it.
Ji Oh: The most exciting part for me was the casting. Finding the right face and the right attitude isn’t so easy, but still very fun. When a girl comes in and tries my clothes on and looks great, nothing makes me happier.
Laura Vassar and Kristopher Brock: Seeing the world we dreamt of come together was the most exciting part. The days before our presentation were our favorite — the styling, casting, hair and makeup tests, and set design.

Setting the Hook, a Diver’s Return to the Andrea Doria

Setting the Hook, a Diver’s Return to the Andrea Doria

The 1956 collision of the Andrea Doria and the Stockholm triggered a night of sheer terror for the Andrea Doria’s 1,706 passengers and crew and set in motion one of history’s most dramatic rescues at sea. From the moment the Andrea Doria settled on the sea floor in 240 feet of water, skilled sport divers have risked their lives to simply touch the “Mount Everest of wreck diving.” Not all returned alive. Peter Hunt crewed on five Andrea Doria expeditions during the early 1980s before becoming a Navy pilot and settling in Washington State. Nearly twenty years after first exploring the Andrea Doria – and following twelve months of training in the sport’s amazing advances in equipment and techniques – Hunt hugged his wife and children goodbye and returned to New York to dive the Andrea Doria once again. The experience transformed him forever. Setting the Hook explores the Andrea Doria through an introspective odyssey of memory, heart-pounding adventure, and history as thirty years of extreme diving and enduring friendships merge in a personal tale of learning to accept life’s oldest challenge. Sacred Statues Destroyed By The Taliban Return As Ghostly Projections

A pair of sacred statues that the Taliban destroyed in Afghanistan have been recreated by enormous 3-D light projections.

The Sunni Muslim Taliban forces blew up the Buddha statues in March 2001 as an act of religious terror. Leader Mullah Omar declared that they were false idols and forced local workers to blow them up. The statues were carved into cliffs in Afghanistan’s Bamiyan Valley, a World Heritage Site, about 1,500 years ago, and have lay in rubble for more than a decade.

Chinese documentarians Janson Yu and Liyan Hu created huge projections of the statues over the weekend, according to The Atlantic. They journeyed to the Bamiyan Valley after UNESCO and the Afghan government gave them permission to debut their work.

This photo taken on June 7, 2015, shows the projected image of a Buddha statue in the Bamiyan Valley.

The ghostly 3-D light projections filled the one hundred-foot high cutouts in the mountains where the original stone statues once stood. Over 150 people watched the spectacle, The Atlantic reported.

There was an international outcry after the Buddha statues were demolished, but UNESCO, archaeologists and the Afghan government haven’t been able to agree on whether the statues should be restored.

Please Stand By, I Will Return After A Short Break

I can almost pinpoint the moment I decided to take a leave of absence from my job. The date isn’t stuck in my mind, but the feeling I had in that moment is.

The leave is temporary. There will be a new Talking TV podcast on “Arrow,” “The Flash” and reader questions next week, and I’ll be on Twitter here and there as well, but this will be my last post for about two months.

Every year for the past five years, I’ve had the honor of serving on the jury of the Peabody Awards. It’s intensely rewarding but also a sizable commitment of time and mental energy.

As it happens, about five years ago, my mother was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, a progressive and fatal neurological and physical disorder. On June 1, HBO will air a documentary, “The Lion’s Mouth Opens”; it’s about a woman’s decision to get tested and find out whether she inherited the disease from her father. I haven’t been able to watch it yet, but I’m glad it exists. HD isn’t that well known and I hope this film helps raise awareness, and I plan to watch the documentary this summer.

Dealing with all the normal ups and downs life has thrown at me — being a parent, doing a demanding job that I love, being a spouse and dealing with two sick parents (my father died in late 2013) — has made life … well, let’s say, interesting. And more than a little tiring at times.

After this year’s Peabody duties ended, I was hanging out with my mother one day when a realization struck me pretty forcefully. She was slurring her words a lot more than she had in the past. Words and phrases were colliding and sliding around when she tried to speak, and it was harder to understand her.

When you are always around someone with a progressive disease, it can be difficult to notice big changes, but I noticed that one. That moment set off an alarm bell in my head. A voice inside me said, “Stop. Pay attention. Don’t just let this slide by.”

Not long after that, I inquired about taking time off, and every step of the way, everyone at The Huffington Post said, “Go for it,” and asked if they could help in any way. The last few years have doled out some very tough times for my family, but I cannot overstate how fortunate I feel to have spent those years working for a patient, flexible and supportive employer.

Given how willing my bosses have been to give me a day or a week off here and there, why not just juggle and multitask and keep on muddling through the wide array of emotional, logistical and professional tasks I’ve had on my plate in any given day or week? It’s what I have been doing for a while now, and with the help and support of my husband and siblings, we’ve been getting by, and in some ways, things are far less chaotic than they were right after my father passed.

I could try to keep going on in the plate-spinning, multitasking mode of the last few years, but, without going into detail, there is just too much I need to do on the family front at the moment, and I wanted to have the time and space do those things well. Mom can’t pay her bills, shop or handle any of her affairs, and taking care of all those things on top of managing my own life can get wearing. More importantly, you can become so task-focused and list-oriented that, in a quest to make sure that everyone and everything is taken care of, you can start forgetting about the human beings involved — human beings who are complex, autonomous and capable of bringing joy into my life. My mom, whose favorite hobby remains playing craps at the gambling boats, still makes me laugh on the regular, lest you think my life is a constant round of errands and tragedies. It’s not, but her condition will continue to get worse, and I want to bask in whatever good times are left.

In addition to getting a bunch of big tasks done for her, I want to spend time with my mother — just be with her. I won’t be idle, but ultimately, it’s about being in the room with her and taking her to the mall, while I can. I want to talk with her, as long as she can still talk.

Words are the tools I use in my work, but it goes way beyond that. I love words all the time; I usually have 30 browser tabs open to articles I want to read, and my idea of heaven is diving to the stacks of unread books around my house. I’ll never know enough about the inner workings of language and I’ll never be able to fully master its powers — hence my love for what I do — but I have learned more about the limitations of words in the last few years. They are blunt instruments. And now, my mother’s words are becoming sparse and squashed. Her sentences are turning into abstract expressionist works.

I didn’t have the conversations I wanted to have with my father at the end, because I didn’t know it was the end. It didn’t take long for chemotherapy to destroy his brain; one day he was swearing at a football game, the next day he had lost the power of reason. I did say some final words to him, after we removed all life support and his body lingered, but it wasn’t the same as really talking to him. My final words may have fallen on deaf ears.

I don’t want that to happen with my mom. Usually we talk about whatever’s happening on “Judge Judy,” and she often has strong opinions on “Dancing with the Stars.” We argue about “Maury,” which I cannot abide. Every time we watch “The Talk,” she reminds me that Ray Romano went on the show to discuss winning a Peabody for “Men of a Certain Age.” (This made her a big Ray Romano fan.)

Her memory is unpredictable but still strong in some areas. The other day, she recalled where one of my eight million cousins went to college, a fact I could not have retrieved on a bet. And yet she is always anxious about whether her bills are paid and sometimes she forgets where we’re going when we’re in the car. New situations and circumstances are scary when new memories don’t harden and solidify and instead slip away like phantoms.

When I was in college, she would call me and want to talk, talk, talk. I would put the phone down, leave the room, get food and return, and she would still be talking. I would roll my eyes, because I was a typical 20 year old dope. Now I know I’ll probably do that to my son after he goes to college; I’ll try not to be that overly talky mom and end up texting too much instead.

My mother has fewer words every day. For a couple of months, I’m going to make sure I hear as many of them as I can.

He and his surviving team must again travel across the galaxy, this time to the world where he lost his naval command, and his original team, so many years ago: Eden. Northern Exposed: Darren Burrows’ Return to Cicely

One day twenty years ago, Darren Burrows performed his final scene as Ed Chigliak and sauntered off the set of Northern Exposure for the last time. One hundred and ten episodes complete. There were no bon voyages, no shattered bottles of champagne, no tears, no goodbye party. No last-minute sprint to the costume shop to retrieve Ed’s preferred black leather jacket.

It was just another quiet workday.

To this day Northern Exposure retains a stoutly cultish fan base. It never attracted legions of fans, but the ones it hooked for six seasons stayed devout. It was edgier, zanier and anything but a waxy wonderland of familiar. Its premise simple: a young Jewish doctor from New York is required to practice in an ultra-remote town of hermits to repay a scholarship from the state of Alaska.

2015-05-08-1431094638-4250677-JohnnyC.Still003.jpg
Photo: John Corbett (left) and Darren Burrows (right). All surviving cast members of Northern Exposure participated in Burrows’ new book “Northern Exposed.”

From the ex-con disc jockey who served as a walking, talking literary reference (Chris Stevens played by John Corbett), to Burrows’ half-Native aspiring filmmaker Ed Chigliak, the characters were sweet, sour, and clever. It ended abruptly, with fans still wondering what happened – and why.

“Northern Exposure wasn’t a place, it was a state of mind,” said Darren Burrows, 48, who explains away the mystery and loss in his new book, “Northern Exposed,” which was crowdfunded on Indiegogo.

“The book is totally and completely for fans of the show. The fans raised the money. I tried to explain why after six seasons what caused the show to run into the ground and the sequence of the events that forced the network to cancel it.”

Burrows said that he steered away from traditional publishing because the book belonged to the fans – not an editor or marketing firm; it was their habit and beloved companion. They made it, they supported it, and they are the ones who deserved the unvarnished account.

2015-05-08-1431094707-1208410-Productnew.jpg

“I felt that a traditional publisher wouldn’t understand the nature of Northern Exposure,” said Burrows.

“I wanted it to be your book. I didn’t want to do anything to affect fans negatively. But I still wanted to tell the truth. I know that fans don’t want to hear nothing negative about their beloved Northern Exposure. Remember that it all came from a place of caring.”

Toward the end, morale on the set sagged. Characters’ personality traits changed from episode to episode and some of the show’s original innocence and intelligence seemed to be lost in a morass of chaos and unevenness. Some fans felt as if the final episodes shouldn’t have made it past dress rehearsal.

“While this view is strictly my own, I believe there was a general feeling or consensus that our labor of love – toward the end – to a certain degree, was hard on us. By the end, the cast and only about half of crew were the only things left from the very beginning. Not the producers, not the writers or the creators. They weren’t there.”

Ed Chigliak’s interest in Woody Allen and Martin Scorsese was overtaken by a new interest in medicine and healing. The next Orson Welles drifted into the mystic realm of shamanism.

“Ed was half-Native, half-white, and I guess the shaman seemed like the obvious choice. In the beginning, everything about Northern Exposure was the opposite of what it appeared to be. Natives have already been defined as shamans. It’s a bit overdone.

“There is not a lot of flexibility as an actor on television. There is a leap of faith you don’t have with films or plays or special guest star roles. You sign on for one thing, you sign on for what is unwritten and what’s unknowable. Sometimes it is not the part you agreed to play. If you watch the first eight episodes of Northern Exposure and then you watch the end, it is completely different, perhaps too much evolved.”

Behind the scenes, television programs are experiments in communal living. Burrows spent six years in Roslyn, Washington preparing, shooting, waiting and rehearsing. Six years of friendships and unconventional bonding. Six years of quietly growing up.

2015-05-08-1431094763-8023072-Final.Still004.jpg

“We were so much involved with the show for five, six years of our lives,” said Burrows. “In the end, we wrapped it up, put it in a box, and moved on to the next chapter of our lives. To take the box down and remember the treasures, it is really like a time capsule. One hour of the show was two weeks for me, 10 months out of the year. We’d be snowed in for 3, 4 days in little hotels. There was a bound between us and emotions. It was nice to explore that old love.

“It needed to be done and there is some emotional content it in. For me those years – 22 to 28 – that important chunk of your life. Then, I didn’t understand what those years were. To unpack those years specifically, there is a lot there.”

Burrows said that Northern Exposure never suffered from any type of backstage drama or in-fighting. He has effusive praise for fellow cast members. What led to the show’s departure was a potent mixture of ambiguity over its licensing and rights and the corporate overlords deeming it unprofitable.

“All the difficulty came from who owned the rights,” said Burrows. “We never knew it was going on. There were no hints about its demise or anything. Barry Corbin was the first to tell me, and he saw it after the fact, in an article picked up from the Associated Press, which talked about Sandy’s lawsuit against Universal.”

In 1994, a writer/producer named Sandy Veith sued Universal/MCA claiming Northern Exposure was based on a show he created. He entered into a development contract with Universal in 1981 and wrote a pilot for a series which was called Colletta. Universal optioned Colletta in succession to NBC and ABC, both of whom expressed no interest in the project in the late-1980s. In the early 1990s, Universal sold something called Northern Exposure to CBS. Both Colletta and Northern Exposure were nearly identical in premise. The same Universal executives who had backed Colletta were the persons who sold Northern Exposure to CBS.

MCA and Universal claimed that writers Joshua Brand and John Falsey developed Northern Exposure independently and based it in part on the actual experiences of a mutual friend. Veith sued Universal and MCA. He won close to 7.5 million in the initial case.

“He wanted his share of the profits,” said Burrows. “Universal was in an untenable position to pay out millions of dollars to Sandy, which made it unprofitable. Universal spent close to what they were making to keep producing the show for CBS. There was no incentive to not kill the show. It would be expedient if it went away.”

No matter the ending, Northern Exposure’s memory endures as a funny, touching show about the human condition and about the common similarities that tie us and sometimes weigh us down.

“At first you don’t always miss your show and you want to escape,” said Burrows. “But it has proved to be inescapable, in a good way. I’ve become more and more aware of how the show has touched people in special ways. For example, Steven Spielberg invited me to do a part in Amistad. We were in Newport on location and he said, “I really enjoyed all of your references to me on Northern Exposure.'”

Rehashing the shards of the past, Burrows received a warm response from his former co-workers.

“All surviving cast members participated,” said Burrows. “I was a little nervous about reuniting. It was surprisingly like a family reunion. I hadn’t seen (actresses) Cynthia Geary or Elaine Miles in 20 years, I was nervous. But then it was as if you never parted ways.”

Indeed, Burrows’ life can probably be sorted into three sections: Ed Chigliak and, well, everything before and after. Booking another prominent role hasn’t always been that easy. But Burrows has stayed busy in film and television and feels that his world holds the right balance of freedom and exhaustion. He lives in the Ozarks with his wife, who is an executive chef in Branson, Missouri.

“It’s a little like Deliverance – only friendlier,” chuckled Burrows.

“I’ve fallen in love with it. I’ve never been in anyplace like it. I left for Los Angeles at 16 for a big adventure, and after 20 years, it was not that much of an adventure anymore.”

Success comes in all degrees, and if name and face recognition and the longstanding brimming affection of a classic show’s following are measures, then Burrows nailed it.

“It’s funny because I never set out to be an actor,” said Burrows. “I grew up without running water, an outhouse, we were very poor. So the variety and the color of the journey I’ve experienced is interesting. It has taken me some time to come to terms with that kind of longevity and being known for something. When the pictures pop up of Ed – the baby face – I guess I was young and beautiful back then.”

Love of Northern Exposure hasn’t subsided. There is even an annual Moose Fest in Roslyn, Washington where the show was filmed on the eastern slope of the Cascade Mountains, 80 miles from Seattle off Interstate 90. At the end of the day, Burrows knows that he was lucky to play Ed Chigliak for as long as he did.

“Our fans are like the Trekkies of Alaska,” said Burrows. “I think it is larger now than it was when it first aired. At the height of its popularity, it was syndicated in, I think, 48 countries. At the Moose Fest, what’s nice is that people from as far as South Africa and Europe have made it a part of their plan.”

And whatever happened to Ed’s signature black leather jacket?

“There were actually two leather jackets,” said Burrows. “You make doubles of everything in case one gets ruined. One was auctioned. The other one I have.”

Harrison Ford Set To Return For ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel That Denis Villeneuve Will Direct

Harrison Ford will reprise his role as Rick Deckhard in a sequel to “Blade Runner.” Alcon Entertainment announced the news in a press release, while also touting that Denis Villeneuve (“Prisoners”) would replace Ridley Scott in the director’s chair. Scott, who directed the acclaimed first film, is still on board as executive producer.

“We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on ‘Prisoners,'” Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said in a statement. “Hampton [Fancher] and Michael [Green], with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.” Fancher was the original film’s co-writer.

Ford was officially offered the role back in May of last year. “We would be honored, and we are hopeful, that Harrison will be part of our project,” Kosove and Johnson said at the time.

In December, Scott said Ford was excited about the project. “I sent him this [script] and he said it’s the best thing he’s ever read,” Scott told MTV. “It’s very relevant to what happened in the first one.”

According to the press release, the story for the new film will pick up “several decades” after the conclusion of 1982’s “Blade Runner.” Production is expected to start in the summer of 2016.

Matt Damon Confirms ‘Bourne’ Return For 2016

Back in September, Deadline.com reported that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass would return to the Jason Bourne franchise for a new film, the duo’s third Bourne film together and Damon’s fourth as the character overall. On Friday, Damon confirmed the news to E! Online.

“Yes, next year,” Damon told E! about when the new Bourne film will begin production. “It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”

That’s true. Damon had long said he would only reprise his role in the franchise if Greengrass returned as well.

“I’ve always been open to it if Paul Greengrass is the director,” Damon said to CNBC in May of this year. “We’ve just never been able to come up with a story.”

Damon’s last Bourne film, “The Bourne Ultimatum,” was released in 2007 and grossed more than $ 442 million around the globe. That feature ended with Bourne walking away from the espionage game.

“If you really look at the mythology of the character, we would have to figure out some reason to get him going again,” Damon said to HuffPost Entertainment in July of 2012. “Paul and I haven’t been able to do it. And we really wanted to make another one; we almost were making one a couple of years ago — and then we just couldn’t crack it.”

In the interim, the franchise took a detour: 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy,” which starred Jeremy Renner as an agent named Aaron Cross.

“I love the idea of Greengrass and Damon,” Renner told HuffPost Entertainment about Damon’s potential return earlier this year. He was excited about the possibilities: “Let [our characters] be adversaries, let them become buddies, whatever the heck it might be — them coming together would be a pretty tremendous thing.”

According to the original Deadline.com report, Renner’s Cross likely won’t be involved in the Damon film, but a sequel to “The Bourne Legacy” with Justin Lin set as director is still in development. Damon’s movie, meanwhile, is set for a July 16, 2016 bow.

Ah, that’ll be one big nod to the conspiracy theorists everywhere, then. No one listens to their fans like writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, and plays with them a little in return. According to Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock on the roof, there are 13 possible outcomes in total. So looks like we might have to wait for the truth for a bit longer after all…

Sherlock’s return was greeted with a welcome less warm than he would have perhaps liked

Cut to… Gatiss as weary Mycroft having to tap some numbers into his international speed-dial, brush up his Serbian, engage in some tiresome ‘field work’ to locate his errant little brother, and return him to his Baker Street fold.

And that, expectant viewers, was very much that. Two years’ worth of all our wondering, tucked into a drawer for the time being. Onward…

Mary (Amanda Abbington) had (almost) replaced Sherlock in Doctor Watson’s affections, but proved crucial to the restoration of their bromance

Into the up-to-date world of Dr Watson (Martin Freeman), complete with fiancee Mary (Freeman’s real-life partner Amanda Abbington) and moustache, moving on with his life, much to the surprise of Mrs Hudson (Una Stubbs) – “So soon after Sherlock?” she asked guilelessly.

But this was a light appetiser for the serious business of his reunion with the much-missed Holmes who, despite his big brain, managed to misjudge such concepts as how grief can turn to resentment when it turns out to be misplaced for two sad, lonely years. Sherlock got a much warmer reception even from DI Lestrade (Rupert Graves), and that was even after Holmes got his name wrong.

Benedict Cumberbatch was on fine form as the loner detective

Fortunately for fans, it wasn’t too long before Holmes and Watson were reconciled to combat an underground terrorism network operating on the underground network. From then on, it was all torches in dark tunnels, upturned collars and lots and lots of nifty editing as Holmes homed in on quite a bit of a bomb, and Watson continued to prove his peerless Everyman acting stripes, equal parts confusion, good intention, and deep indignation when said bomb turned out to have an off-switch. That Sherlock fella, eh? Such a wag.

Because of all of Watson’s understandable, brooding resentment for much of the 90 minutes, a lot of the real pleasure in this episode in fact came from the jollier exchanges between the Holmes brothers, with both siblings proving that absence makes the heart grow more competitive… who can deduce more accurately? Who can say more more words in one minute? Who can enunciate more c-c-r-r-i-sply? Wonderful stuff from both Cumberbatch and Gatiss.

A challenge to keep up with, a joy to watch – there’s a reason this kind of telly takes two years to make. But oh, how we’ve missed it, and oh, how it was worth the wait.

How DID he do it? Let us know your thoughts below, and what you thought of Sherlock’s big return…
