Brands to Check Out at the Vegas Shows

As the men’s market nears its end and the women’s season kicks off, brands and buyers will flock to Las Vegas to check out the spring market. With Project Men’s and Women’s, WWDMAGIC, Liberty Fairs, Agenda and more commencing next week at the Las Vegas Convention Center and Sands Expo Center, here are some brands to keep on the radar.

ARTURO TORRES

Backstory: Michael Natenshon joked that he started Marine Layer after his girlfriend threw out his favorite shirt. Although he crossed into the fashion world from the finance arena, Natenshon had always had an interest in apparel and just couldn’t find anything in the market quite like what he wanted. He moved to Los Angeles to study textiles and develop a fabric that would be the basis for Marine Layer. The founder and chief executive officer launched the brand in 2010, offering T-shirts to friends and family before opening a pop-up shop in San Francisco that eventually became a full-time lease and one of the brand’s 41 retail locations.
Though Marine Layer operates stores across the United States in big markets such as New York City, San Francisco, Southern California,

The ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot Is Coming: A Look Back at the Show’s Iconic Fashion Moments

A “Gossip Girl” reboot is officially in the works.
Seven years after it went off the air, the CW teen drama, famous for its over-the-top fashion, is being remade for HBO Max, a new streaming service launching in spring 2020, which will be home to HBO and WarnerMedia programming.
According to TVLine, the reboot will also be set in New York and will highlight how social media plays into the lives of elite Manhattan private school students. The show’s former executive producers — Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage and Joshua Safran — are returning for the reboot, but it has not yet been announced if the original series’ cast — including Blake Lively, Leighton Meester and Penn Badgley, among others — will be returning.
“Gossip Girl” has long been admired as one of the most fashionable TV shows of the late Aughts, attracting some of the industry’s biggest names for cameos, including Rachel Zoe, Karlie Kloss, Cynthia Rowley and Tory Burch, among others. Costume designer Eric Daman dressed the cast in looks straight from the runway, creating the show’s most iconic fashion moments. The series’ last season in particular had a number of standout looks, including Meester’s character, Blair Waldorf, who wore an Elie

Retailers Embrace Feminine Side of Men’s Shows in Paris

PARIS — Retailers embraced the wave of femininity that swept through the men’s shows in Paris. Fluid suits, silky shirts, a profusion of pastels — think pink! — floral prints and individual expression were the names of the game this season.
“The most important new direction we are looking for in Paris is the genderless look,” said Federica Montelli, head of fashion at La Rinascente.
Emmanuel de Bayser, co-owner of The Corner, pushed the idea a bit further:
“The classic, traditional men’s look for us is completely gone. Easy, fresh and bold are the keywords,” he said.
Dior topped the favorite collections, with Louis Vuitton and Dries Van Noten as runners-up. The next tier was crowded: Jil Sander, Loewe, Celine, Valentino and Off-White, reflecting diversity in opinions.
In the hot-new-talent department, Casablanca and Nanushka caught notice. And the best venue went to Louis Vuitton — the Paris streets never fail to charm. Lanvin’s poolside runway and Dior’s futuristic set were also popular.
While snarled traffic and hot sticky weather did not go unnoticed, the fashion, it seems, will be remembered the most.
Here, a roundup of the Paris spring collections in the eyes of the retailers.

Trends Converge Amid Coed Shows, ‘Fluid’ Fashions

PARIS — Fashion is having a his-and-hers moment. With a phalanx of influential brands including Gucci, Balenciaga, Givenchy and Saint Laurent headlining the momentum to coed shows, men’s and women’s collections are becoming mirror reflections of one another.
Also driving the convergence is the streetwear trend gripping the industry, plus the open mind-set of younger generations coming of age in a socio-political climate where more and more open discussions are taking place around gender boundaries.
According to Carlo Capasa, president of the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the coed movement confirms “fashion’s ability to catch, codify and [reflect] the most radical social and cultural changes.”
“Setting aside gender stereotypes and breaking boundaries between the masculine and feminine, it becomes fluid,” he said.
For Emma McClendon, associate curator of costume at The Museum at FIT, the Seventies — an era that saw a crossing over of fits and styles across genders, with women wearing pants en masse for the first time and men wearing platforms — was possibly the only other time in modern history that men’s and women’s fashions have so resembled each other. “And now I’m really struck by how close they are, in all parts of the market, whether we’re looking at

Carrie Underwood Confidently Shows Off Face After Injuring It as She Rehearses for the ACM Awards

Carrie Underwood shared another photo of her healing face ahead of her first performance since her Nov. 10 accident.

The singer, 35, confirmed she would be performing on Sunday’s ACM Awards with a photo of herself during rehearsals. It’s the third photo she’s shared of her face since she fell down the steps of her home in November.

“Getting ready for the weekend…#CryPretty #ACMawards@CALIAbyCarrie,” Underwood wrote in the caption.

The last time she hinted at a performance was last week when she shared another shot of herself during rehearsals.

Underwood suffered a broken wrist and damage to her face that resulted in 40 to 50 stitches.

The Academy of Country Music Awards will broadcast live from Las Vegas on April 15, and Underwood — a frequent performer at the show — is nominated for two of the night’s honors: female vocalist of the year and vocal event of the year, for her duet with Keith Urban on “The Fighter.”

It would be her first public appearance since the incident.

Earlier last week, she also shared a black and white photo of half of her face while forgoing a caption.

The American Idol winner shared a black and white photo of herself gazing intently inside a music studio. Not only were fans excited to see Underwood was making new music again, but they were also happy to see was once again sharing a photo of herself on social media again as she has kept selfies and pictures to a minimum since her fall.

“It’s crazy how a freak random accident can change your life,” she said in a note to fans in January.

Retailers Bet Big at the Vegas Men’s Shows

LAS VEGAS — There are a lot of opportunities to capitalize on in the men’s market this year. While the industry tends to move more slowly than women’s, the continuing popularity of streetwear, heritage influences and technical fabrications are all understandable trends for the men’s shopper and are buoying the spirits of stores attending the Project, Liberty Fairs, Capsule and Agenda trade shows here this week.
Most men’s retailers are coming off a solid 2017 and believe that the fashion trends in the market will help them continue the momentum into this year.
As James Starke, senior vice president and general merchandise manager of men’s for J.C. Penney, put it: “We had a good fourth quarter and are off to a good start in Q1. There’s a lot of newness in men’s and kids and we have a lot of new brands coming in, so we feel good for spring.”
Looking ahead to fall, Starke has similar optimism — albeit tempered with some caution.
“These shows have become a touch point for us and our suppliers,” he said. “They help validate what we’re doing for fall.”
Tom Ott, chief merchant for Saks Off 5th and Gilt, said he appreciated the shows, particularly Agenda and Liberty, for all the

Sharon Wauchob to Launch Men’s Wear, Stage Coed Shows From June

ONE FOR THE BOYS: The Irish designer Sharon Wauchob plans to launch men’s wear — and join the coed gang — starting with London Fashion Week Men’s in June, and in concert with the Savile Row tailor Norton & Sons.
“The idea of change started with my move from Paris to London, which opened up the possibility and benefit of new avenues and new methods of showing. There was also the timing issue with deliveries and the fact that since moving to London I’ve been fascinated with bespoke men’s tailoring,” Wauchob said.
She plans to host a women’s presentation to show her fall 2018 range during London Fashion Week on Feb. 18 and will show a new collections of women’s wear and menswear in June.
As for her collaboration with Norton & Sons, she said,“I like exploring the masculinity in men’s wear. As a designer it genuinely interests me. Norton & Sons offers a modern look and a willingness to have that dialogue with me. I like the classic look with a moment of surprise.”
The designer, who moved her show to London from Paris three seasons ago, said that designing for men requires a different approach. She said there are technical differences to

Upbeat Mood Prevails at New York Men’s Trade Shows

NEW YORK — New year, bright outlook.
That sums up the mood of specialty stores shopping the men’s trade shows here. A strong end to 2017, a soaring stock market and some tempting merchandise options for fall all combined to boost retailers’ spirits.
“Holiday was great,” said Ken Giddon, president of Rothmans, which operates three men’s stores in New York. “There have been some weather difficulties in January but that’s OK. We had a surprisingly strong fall so inventories are not what we had expected. My mood is good — it’s an exciting time to be a retailer.”
He said he has been working more with his suppliers to create partnerships that benefit both. “Every conversation is not: ‘What are you selling and how much is it?’ But it’s, ‘How can we work together.’ That’s what it’s going to take to make the wholesale model work today and I actually enjoy making deals almost more than I enjoy looking at merchandise.”
That said, Giddon did manage to find several brands that he liked at the shows. “I’m surprised at how many great Scandinavian brands there are,” he said, pointing to the Scandinavian Man section at Project. He especially liked Hestra gloves and Cords trousers.

Jonathan Anderson Shows Latest Uniqlo Designs at Brighton Pavilion

GRAND DESIGNS: Jonathan Anderson hosted a magical dinner Wednesday night at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, England, once the seaside holiday home of the hard-partying King George IV and now a national treasure, to mark the second Uniqlo and J.W. Anderson collection.
Anderson said he visits the pavilion, with its Taj Mahal-like exterior and lavish 19th-century interiors, a pastiche of Chinese and Indian art, about once a year. He said he loves it so much he wanted to stage an event there.
Guests took to the Banqueting Room, with its glittering dome, one-ton crystal chandelier and Chinese paintings, and sat at a long table that had been built, just for the evening, alongside the 19th-century one that was was set for King George and his guests.
Earlier in the evening, they also got to see George’s bedroom, with its secret door for special guests, the sprawling kitchen with its great fireplaces ready to roast dozens of chickens at a time, and the chic bamboo furniture that was imported from China by the spendthrift king, who used the pavilion as his pleasure palace.
Anderson said he loved the juxtaposition of the lavish pavilion with the seaside, resort-y feel of Brighton, which was the inspiration for his

What to Watch: Are Separate Men’s Fashion Shows a Dying Breed?

The men’s fashion calendar is in a state of flux.
The rise of the co-ed show, where major designers are opting to show their men’s wear during the traditional February and September women’s dates, is seriously impinging on the men’s market.
Probably the hardest hit this past season was Milan Men’s Fashion Week, following the decisions by Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Missoni and Etro to go co-ed.
London was also impacted. The big names — including Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford and Moschino — all decided to show in different cities or formats, while a number of smaller calendar stalwarts were absent, too, including Sibling, which went into voluntary liquidation earlier this year; Agi & Sam, which is restrategizing, and Casely-Hayford, which is switching its focus to retail.
One bright spot on the European circuit was Pitti Uomo, the international trade show in Florence. The most recent edition in June found a calendar chock-full of shows and presentations that included J.W. Anderson and Off-White events along with special guests such as Hugo Boss, Christian Louboutin, Federico Curradi and Alanui.
Paris seemed to hold its own the best, with a bevy of new names added to the spring calendar to join the big guns: Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten,

Charli XCX Cancels Shows in Japan After Falling ‘Seriously Ill’: ‘Nothing Is Making Me Better’

Get well soon, Charli XCX!

The “Boys” singer announced on Instagram and Twitter late Friday evening that she has been forced to terminate two concerts in Japan on doctor’s orders. Charli was scheduled as one of the headlining performers as part of the Summer Sonic concert series in Tokyo and Osaka on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

“I have been seriously ill for the past couple of days with really bad tonsillitis and fever. I haven’t been able to leave my hotel room at all,” she wrote in a note.

“I passed out when going through security in Beijing and I’ve since had injections/been on antibiotics but nothing is making me better,” Charli continued. “I can’t even explain to you how excited I was to be in Japan.”

The “Boom Clap” hitmaker also shared that she had extended her international trip “to work in the studio on a load of other projects.”

Concluding, “This morning the doctor told me I cannot perform without doing more damage to my voice and my health.”

Summer Sonic released a statement on their website. “Charli XCX hurriedly canceled the appearance due to doctor’s orders,” the statement read, attributing the singer’s illness as a “bad throat.” Summer Sonic ensured all other acts will perform as planned.

In August 2015, Charli previously canceled the second leg of her joint U.S. tour with Bleachers unexpectedly due to “personal reasons.”

Upbeat Vibes Abound at Vegas Men’s Shows

LAS VEGAS — While business conditions remain challenging, the retailers who have survived are upbeat about the future.
But the rules have changed. To lure customers away from their computers and into stores, merchants are being creative — installing pop-up shops, giving their stores a facelift and shifting their mix to inject a much-needed shot of color and comfort.
Although traffic seemed a bit off at the men’s shows here this week, the department and specialty stores who did make the trek to Las Vegas to shop Project, Liberty Fairs, Capsule, Agenda and the PGA Show found a vast assortment of colorful sportswear and clothing for spring, much of it boasting performance features.
At the Doneger Group’s spring men’s overview on the opening day of the shows, Patty Leto, senior vice president of merchandising, said, “The retail landscape is changing at an unprecedented rate” and merchants need to embrace those changes by “thinking out-of-the-box.” Today’s customer is time-poor and experience-hungry, she said, and searching for newness — and it’s up to stores to fulfill those needs.
For spring, the key opportunities center around offering diverse wardrobe options with a distinctly casual bent. Tim Bess, Doneger’s fashion trend analyst, said key pieces include utility bottoms

Independents Upbeat at New York Men’s Trade Shows

NEW YORK — Retailers at the men’s trade shows here this week had one primary category on their minds: sportswear.
Gone are the days when buyers scoured the fairs for new tailored clothing labels. As stores, particularly independents, continue to battle a disinterested consumer, macroeconomic factors and the growing power of Amazon, executives were mainly looking to pick up new casualwear brands to complement their existing offerings.
The good news is that the formula seems to be working: Most independents interviewed said business has picked up slightly and they’re keeping their fingers crossed the trend will continue.
Ken Giddon, president of New York’s Rothmans, noted that thanks to a successful pop-up with Psycho Bunny — “our best pop-up ever” — the store had “a really good June.”
“We’re flexible enough to keep bobbing and weaving,” he added.
For the men’s specialty store, that means de-emphasizing tailored clothing and keeping customers interested by featuring a rotating series of pop-up shops. “It’s part of our model now,” Giddon said. “It works to always have something fresh.”
He said “tailored clothing is becoming a smaller part of the business, but we’re growing other parts,” especially sportswear. He especially liked Stitch Note’s short-sleeve wovens, Benson and Rodd & Gunn’s sportswear,

Coach Makes Switch to Dual-Gender Fashion Shows

Coach is never one to shy away from a fashion trend. The house will now make the switch to a dual-gender fashion show, WWD has learned.
Coach will move its men’s show from London to New York, and present it in tandem with its women’s collection — following a two-show-a-year model going forward.
Previously, the house staged four shows a year – two each for men and women.
The leather goods house made its first move toward dual-gender shows in December, with its 75th anniversary show. There, Coach presented its fall 2017 collection for men and pre-fall 2017 collection for women.
On Feb. 14, the show will feature fall 2017 women’s ready-to-wear as well as previously “unseen” men’s looks from the same season. Reasons for why these looks were not presented in the original fall 2017 men’s lineup could not be learned.
A Coach spokesperson did note that the forthcoming show will feature a “greater proportion” of women’s looks.
Coach last held a men’s show in London last June, when it unveiled its spring 2017 collection in the English capitol.
Going forward, pre-fall and resort collections will be shown with look books and editor appointments.
Chief executive officer Victor Luis and creative director Stuart Vevers were unavailable for comment.

The “People Power” Family Superbook: Book 13. Shopping Guide (Online Shopping, Product Reviews, Department Stores, Trade Shows, Closeout – Wholesale, Factory Outlets)

In my opinion, unless you’re a total introvert, agoraphobic, disabled or too lazy to leave the house, your best bet to buy most things you need is locally. Go to the Yellow Pages, read your local newspapers, drive around the shopping areas, go to local free ad websites and talk to people you know about what you need. I generally buy most of my stuff from the big department stores but if I need something like furniture, I’ll check out the furniture stores on the poor side of the town because the prices for the same goods are often much cheaper than a store in the higher class part of town plus you can often haggle with the owner on a cash deal. By shopping on the poor side of town at supermarkets for food, you can often save several dollars on a load of groceries. Beyond that, I generally go to the thrift stores a few times a year to buy t-shirts, clothes and anything else that strikes my fancy as I look around.

‘Late Turkey Dance’! Pink Shows Off Growing Baby Bump in Instagram Video

Pink was grooving and shaking this Thanksgiving.

On Friday, the singer shared a Boomerang video of her growing baby bump, just weeks after announcing that she’s expecting her second child with husband Carey Hart.

“Late turkey dance love from The Harts  #gratitude #loveyourself #loveeachother #morepie,” she captioned the video.

Earlier this month, Pink took to Instagram to share a photo of her and her daughter for her pregnancy announcement.

“Suprise!” Pink wrote alongside a photo with the couple’s 5-year-old daughter Willow Sage. The mother-daughter duo wore coordinating off-white ensembles and brown hats, and Willow’s head rested on her mom’s growing baby bump.

The musician and her motocross-champ husband were married in 2006 and welcomed Willow in June 2011.

“I have lived a lot of life in a very short time, and you get hardened a little bit — you get jaded, you build up walls. And when you see this little kid, and you get to watch them through infancy to toddler to little person, it’s amazing,” the singer previously told PEOPLE about motherhood.

“You see how you were. When you watch this bundle full of love and light that’s untarnished and untainted by heartache and any of the numerous things that change you, it’s very healing. It’s a miracle.”

Mannequin Challenge Shows All The Offensive S**t Asians Put Up With This Year

Between the presidential campaign’s mudslinging and the current resurgence of bigotry and white nationalism, it’s easy to forget just how awkward it was for Asian-Americans in 2016.

But one group wants to remind you of a sector of racism that has gone largely overlooked ― and its lesson comes in the form of a viral mannequin challenge.

The video below, titled “A-Woke,” reveals some of the strange and offensive ways in which Asian-Americans were represented in entertainment and media in 2016.

“Asians are often expected to not make waves, not complain, not fight back,” Teja Arboleda, the video’s co-producer, told The Huffington Post. “This video is about peaceful demonstration against the types of issues brought up in the story.”

Whether it was Fox News’ Jesse Watters trolling the streets of New York’s Chinatown asking people if they know karate, directors casting white actresses (Scarlett Johansson, Tilda Swinton) in originally Asian roles or a senator mocking war hero Rep. Tammy Duckworth for her Asian heritage during a debate, it’s clear that Asian-Americans were made to feel very uncomfortable this year.

This emotionally charged mannequin challenge, Arboleda says, was made to shed light on these often-ignored issues and to help raise the “Asian consciousness.”

“Incessant whitewashing of Asian characters in Hollywood and continued stereotypes of Asians in the media have reached a boiling point,” Arboleda said.

“Asians are marginalized often, as the assumption is that they are all successful and smart,” he added. “We are fighting hard for representation as content creators, directors, producers, actors.”

Putting a spotlight on Asian issues is also especially important now, as Asian-Americans are seeing a surge in racial violence and harassment against them following the presidential election of Donald Trump.

Watch the video above and relive the troubling moments that Asian-Americans had to face this year.

Here’s a list of incidences referenced in the video, in order of appearance.

  1. Chris Rock Failed Asian-Americans With This Controversial Joke
  2. Tilda Swinton Cast In Traditionally Asian Role For ‘Doctor Strange’
  3. Fox News Thinks Jesse Watters’ Racist Chinatown Segment Is Just Good Fun
  4. Senator Makes Distasteful Remark About Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s Ancestry

Sullivan is still trapped with the Melville’s Medicine Show, along with Frederick, Esmeralda and Clarence, travelling around the country. But his family has not given up hope. His parents got in touch with the parents of the other children, and his sister, Jinny, is determined to get back on the road with Manny in order to pick up the trail of the mysterious medicine show. And they are helped by a very real clue: a decades-old newspaper article about a travelling medicine show that mysteriously bears the same name …Back at the show, the Melvilles are becoming unhappy with the children’s performances. Sullivan drops some eggs, and worse, Clarence is finding it a tighter and tighter squeeze inside the “automaton,” the chess-playing Napoleon. They are soon going to need a new child to join the show, and the Melvilles know just the right one. Despite the children’s best efforts to prevent another child from being kidnapped, a new girl joins the show. But the Melvilles may have underestimated the new girl, whose feisty nature is inspirational to Sullivan. The Melvilles certainly seem preoccupied with something-at every new site, Master Melville can be seen carefully examining the grounds. With their families ever closer, the children of the travelling medicine show band together to solve the mystery of who the Melvilles really are and just what they are looking for.

MaxMara, Allure Celebrate Shonda Rhimes Shows

Fall, it seems, has turned into and awards season for those behind-the-scenes for television and movies, as InStyle, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety and WWD have all inaugurated events this year. Allure was the latest to do so, partnering with MaxMara on Saturday night at its Rodeo Drive store to honor the hair, makeup and wardrobe teams behind Shonda Rhimes’ hit shows. Kerry Washington, Tony Goldwyn, Ellen Pompeo, Darby Stanchfield, Liza Weil, Scott Foley and Bellamy Young were among the stars of “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy” and “How to Get Away With Murder” who turned out.
Upon Rhimes’ arrival, Washington danced and chanted, “Shonda, Shonda.”
“Oh, there goes my hairstylist,” said “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Camilla Luddington. “We’re talking about you,” she said, pointing to Melanie Smith.
“Scandal” actress Katie Lowes perhaps picked the wrong time to debut a new hair look.
“I walked in and Shonda was like, ‘What the hell? What did you do?’” she said of her  faux bob. “I was like, ‘No, no, no, I didn’t cut it. I didn’t cut it.’ It’s just tucked up underneath. When you want to go through a major look change you’ve got to talk to Shonda about it for your character.”

Trend-Right Men’s Lines From the Las Vegas Trade Shows

The men’s market is in a relaxed mood.
With sales picking up in the second half and some popular items for fall already emerging, retailers shopping the trade shows in Las Vegas were feeling little stress.
Adding to the optimism were the spring fashion trends of colorful swimwear, comfortable ath-leisurewear and nautical influences in everything from outerwear to accessories. The marriage of function and fashion was also a key market mover, with merchants embracing utilitarian detailing in garments that also sported performance attributes.

“Men’s fashion moves at a glacial pace,” said Patty Leto, senior vice president of merchandising for the Doneger Group. But that pace is quickening as the male consumers’ desire for fashion heats up, she added. Driving the men’s wear acceleration, she said, was the influence of beachwear, ath-leisure and the continued demand for performance.
Key volume drivers for the season, according to the Doneger team, include graphic Ts, printed tank tops, unconstructed sport coats, flat-front shorts, joggers, true activewear and printed swimwear.
Tommy Fazio, president of Project, said the two biggest categories at this market were swimwear and the “whole California lifestyle. Those are the big growth opportunities.”

Celebrating 20 Years, SITE Santa Fe Shows New Commissions and Collaborations

Celebrating 20 Years: SITE Santa Fe’s Collaborative Spirit

A significant anniversary invites a retrospective view, and for SITE Santa Fe’s 20th, the institution is doing just that, in a yearlong series of exhibitions featuring artists who have presented major works at SITE in the past. But for this 20th-anniversary celebration, SITE is not only looking back at its own history, or reprising past projects, rather refreshingly the exhibits that comprise “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” take the form of new work, commissions, and collaborations.

SITE Santa Fe opened in 1995 with its first International Biennial: Longing and Belonging: From the Faraway Nearby, curated by Bruce Ferguson, and has since produced eight biennials, and over 80 exhibitions, helping to launch or galvanize the careers of numerous curators and artists. The notion of reconnecting with artists who have contributed to the institution’s history, taking a look at then and now, exemplifies SITE’s mission to form strong bonds with the international art community while cultivating deep roots within the community of Santa Fe and the wider Southwest region.

Amy Cutler, Cautionary Trail, 2005. Courtesy of the artist and Leslie Tonkonow Artworks + Projects, New York.

Presented in three installments, over spring, summer and fall, “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” first opened in March with work by Gregory Crewdson, Deborah Grant, Roxy Paine, Mary Reid Kelley with Patrick Kelley, Rose B. Simpson, and Jessica Stockholder. The fall installment, opening October 23, will feature installations by Terry Allen, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Wangechi Mutu with Edgar Arceneaux, and Susan Silton with The Crowing Hens. The summer exhibition of “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” is currently on view, until October 4, with installations and collaborations by Ann Hamilton, Janine Antoni with choreographer Stephen Petronio, Amy Cutler with musician Emily Wells and hairdresser Adriana Papaleo, Harmony Hammond with artist Francis Cape, and Dario Robleto with historian Patrick Feaster and Lance Ledbetter of Dust-to-Digital Records. While the wall texts throughout the show acknowledge the contributions of each of the artists to SITE Santa Fe’s exhibitions of the past–Ann Hamilton, for instance, showed in the first Biennial and Janine Antoni showed a major solo show at SITE in 2002–the focus rests on the artists’ current practices.

Dario Robleto, The Pulse Armed With a Pen (An Unknown History of the Human Heartbeat), 2014. Courtesy the artist and Inman Gallery, Houston. Photo: Paul Hester, The Menil Collection.

The installations in the current configuration of “SITE 20 Years/20 Shows” exhibit few connections between them, with each occupying its own discrete room in the gallery. But if there is one conceptual thread running throughout, it is the notion of collaboration–collaboration among artists, between artists and institutions, artists and choreographers, musicians, historians, and so on. A successful collaborative effort can achieve results that a single artist couldn’t produce on her own, a kind of synergistic effect that provides new contexts and new meanings to an artist’s work. In an unsuccessful collaboration, on the other hand, compromises become more apparent than cooperation, resulting in a situation where one person’s vision might supersede another to the detriment of the whole artwork. The wide range of artistic collaboration, both successful and unsuccessful, can be found in SITE Santa Fe’s current exhibition.

Janine Antoni and Stephen Petronio, Honey Baby, 2013. Copyright Janine Antoni and Stephen Petronio; Courtesy of the artists and Luhring Augustine, New York.

Janine Antoni’s collaboration with the choreographer Stephen Petronio, for instance, sheds new light on Antoni’s practice with regard to the grotesque and expressive potential of the human body–in this case a male dancer’s lithe form, emulating the movements of the body in utero–in a somewhat disturbing but entrancing video. And Dario Robleto’s collaboration with sound historians Patrick Feaster and Lance Ledbetter results in a series of small vinyl albums–recordings of the human heart and early gospel spirituals–with extensive liner notes that convey a historical depth and artistic sensibility (despite the somewhat twee aesthetic), enhancing our apprehension of these early recordings visually, textually, and sonically.

Harmony Hammond and Francis Cape, Angle of Repose, 2015, installation view. Courtesy of the artists and SITE Santa Fe. Photo: Eric Swanson.

The collaborative installation by painter Harmony Hammond and sculptor Francis Cape, Angle of Repose (2015), on the other hand, is less apparent as a collaboration at all. Comprised of one of Hammond’s layered monochrome paintings leaning against a wall and a collection of re-made handcrafted furniture by Cape, the two works are somewhat independent of each other, but their proximity yields a new conversation between the works. Their pairing seems more like a very astute curatorial choice, rather than a true collaboration that results in one unified work.

Amy Cutler, installation view, 2015. Courtesy of the artist and SITE Santa Fe. Photo: Eric Swanson.

While Hammond and Cape’s collaboration demonstrates restraint and subtlety, Amy Cutler’s installation commits the sin of sensorial overload. Created with musician Emily Wells and hairdresser Adriana Papaleo, the installation sets out to devise a three-dimensional version of one of Cutler’s surreal paintings. Braided hair intertwined between aspen logs that form a primitive hut in the center of the gallery, lit from within, houses bundled lumps of more hair. An eerie soundtrack of breathing permeates the dark atmosphere. The ambience is meticulously crafted, but the literalness of such a proposal deprives the viewer of the sense of imagination and wonderment one can experience in the scenes of Cutler’s strange and richly detailed paintings.

Ann Hamilton, The common SENSE, 2014-2015, installation view, SITE Santa Fe, 2015. Courtesy of the artist. Photo: Eric Swanson.

At turns impressive, delightful, and poignant, Ann Hamilton’s installation is one of the most richly rewarding of the show. Created in cooperation with the University of Washington’s Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture’s Ornithology collection, the common SENSE · the animals (2014-2015) is comprised of digital scans of bird and animal specimens taken from the collection, printed on stacks of newsprint, and presented salon style across the whole room. Invited to tear off sheets of the newsprint and take some of the pictures home, viewers are confronted with the consequences of their impulse to consume–as each sheet is torn away, the installation is lessened, pointing to the ultimate finitude of natural resources. In the wake of the tragedy of Cecil the lion in Zimbabwe, Hamilton’s installation becomes all the more moving.

Marie Watt, installation view, 2015. Courtesy of the artist and SITE Santa Fe. Photo: Eric Swanson.

The emphasis on collaboration at SITE Santa Fe is not a passing fancy, or just relevant to this particular exhibition, but rather is something that runs deep within the institution’s programming and curatorial mission. This is evidenced in a concurrent exhibition at the museum, Unsuspected Possibilities, supported by a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artistic Innovation and Collaboration Grant, featuring works by Marie Watt, Leonardo Drew, and Sarah Oppenheimer. Marie Watt’s installation in particular perfectly and beautifully illustrates SITE Santa Fe’s continued commitment to collaborative processes and community engagement. The artist, who is of Iroquois descent, involved local Santa Fe students and community members to help embroider designs on fragments of Pendleton blankets, which were then assembled into magnificent constructions, and hung like an advancing regiment through the gallery space. It’s a breathtaking installation, made all the more impressive knowing the many hands that touched it.

See All The Epic Orgies From Your Favorite TV Shows (NSFW)

On Sunday night, “True Detective” had one of the most upscale, creepiest orgies shown on the small screen when Rachel McAdams’ Ani went undercover. But that may make you wonder, have there been other orgies depicted on TV shows? Why yes, of course!

To refresh your memory, The Huffington Post found all the orgy scenes we could (our jobs are tough) and made one big orgy of an orgy video. There’s goofy orgies, like that “Eyes Wide Shut” spoof from “It’s Always Sunny,” there’s Jerry Seinfeld rambling about how he’s not ready to be “an orgy guy,” and then of course there’s the best, and most diverse, sex-capade in the history of TV orgies in Netflix’s “Sense8.” Check out the very NSFW video to get your orgy fix.

Buzz Aldrin Dances With John Travolta, Shows Off Some Out-Of-This World Moves

When you’ve done the moon walk for real, the last thing you need is dancing lessons. But space legend Buzz Aldrin couldn’t resist picking up a few pointers from actor John Travolta.

The two showed off their smooth moves at an event held Saturday night at Kennedy Space Center in Florida to celebrate the kickoff of the Apollo astronaut’s ShareSpace Foundation, a charity aimed at boosting science literacy in kids by incorporating arts into science education.

“I thought I held my own,” Aldrin wrote on a Facebook post. “What do you think?”

Speaking at the event, which was hosted by actor Seth Green, Travolta praised the Apollo astronaut.

“To be here at the Kennedy Space Center, under a Saturn V rocket with an American hero like Buzz Aldrin, it’s just quite a privilege,” Travolta said, according to Florida Today.

He added:

“To start a nonprofit is probably one of the most selfless things a person can do. There is no personal monetary gain from it, it’s a lot of extra work and effort. It’s not an easy task. But, yet, here’s this legend who’s doing just that.”

Monday is the 46th anniversary of the lunar landing in which Neil Armstrong and Aldrin became the first and second humans, respectively, to set foot on the moon.

Ron Diamond’s Animation Show of Shows Coming to Comic-Con, Getting Ready for Nationwide Debut

Toon fans rejoice! The Animation Show of Shows will soon be coming to a theater near you.

Thanks to a successful Kickstarter, this animation industry favorite will now transition from being an insider-only exclusive to becoming a program that film fans around the world can participate in and enjoy.

2015-07-02-1435865026-7316782-Diamond2.jpg

For those of you who don’t know: The Animation Show of Shows has long been Ron Diamond‘s baby. For the past 16 years, this veteran animation producer has circled the globe seeking out the very best new animated short films. Which sounds like it might be a fun way for a cinema fan to spend their time, but is actually a quite challenging task.

“Just recently, I sat through a screening of over 200 student films. All because I was looking for those one or two short animated films that I might consider adding to the line-up on my next Animation Show of Shows,” Ron explained during a recent phone interview.

And previously — once Diamond has selected all of that year’s animated gems — he’d then truck this feature-length compilation to animation studios like Disney, Pixar and Blue Sky. All with the hope that — by exposing these creatives to what the next generation of animators was up to — he’d then inspire these folks to explore unexpected ideas.”

2015-07-02-1435865079-1292332-Diamond3.jpg

“And while I don’t mean to brag, I think that I’ve got a pretty good eye for this stuff. 29 of the films that I’ve showcased in previous Animation Show of Shows have gone on to get Academy Award nominations. And 9 of those animated short films then went on to win the Oscar,” Ron continued.

But after 16 years of annually assembling this great collection of animated short films which was then meant to educate and inspire industry insiders, Diamond was looking to broaden his horizons. He wanted the general public to now be able to get in on the fun. Which is why Ron set up a not-for-profit organization that would then make it possible to The Animation Show of Shows to expand its mission.

“After all, it’s one thing to show these new animated short films to industry insiders who then might have some knowledge of who these fledgling filmmakers are, the reputations of their teachers and/or their independent work. And it’s an entirely different thing to show these great new animated short films to an audience that’s going in cold. That has absolutely no context when it comes to who these filmmakers are and where the ideas for each of these new animated shorts may have come from,” Diamond stated.

2015-07-02-1435865118-6502741-Diamond1.jpg

That was what really drove Ron to get a Kickstarter campaign going for the Animation Show of Shows. If he was going to transform this showcase of new animated short films into something that members of the general film-going public could genuinely understand and appreciate … Well, that then meant that Diamond would have to craft profiles of the talented individuals who had created these animated short films. And given that Ron prides himself on always putting together a program that represents what is going on internationally in animation that year, that then meant Diamond was going to need to send film crews around the globe to create these contextual pieces that would profile that year’s top animators.

Thanks to the generous pledges of the people who supported Ron’s vision for a more ambitious, broader reaching Animation Show of Shows, those profiles will now be included in Diamond’s next feature-length compilation of the finest animated shorts from around the world. Not only that, but Ron will be using these funds to expand into the field of restoration. Singling out great animated short films from the past that need to be preserved and shared.

By the way, if you’re headed to San Diego next week for the 2015 edition of Comic-Con and want to get a sense of the sort of show that Ron Diamond plans on presenting very soon at a theater near you, the 16th Annual Animation Show of Shows will be presented in Hall H on Friday, July 10th from 10 – 11:30 a.m. Hopefully — as part of the Q & A session that’s supposed to follow this presentation — Diamond will then discuss his plans for this award-winning series of animated short films.

Amy Schumer Shows Why The Internet Needs To Get Over Its Disney Princess Obsession

The Internet is nauseatingly obsessed with Disney princesses, and even more obsessed with imagining them in some altered state. (As Velociraptors, seriously?) While websites love to fixate on things like how characters are animated so that their eyes are bigger than their wrists, or how they would look if they had more realistic waistlines, Amy Schumer’s latest sketch tackles the bigger question of why anyone would want to be a princess at all.

Sure, Disney movies and their characters are sanitized versions of classic fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson, but when all the adventure is said and done, being a princess is actually all about being married off as an underage teenager, and hoping you can produce a male heir.

Besides, everyone knows happily ever after isn’t a real thing.

Science Shows Wearing High Heels Makes Women Stronger (and Weaker)

High heels have been found to make women both stronger and weaker according to a new study published in The International Journal of Clinical Practice. The subjects, women studying to become flight attendants in South Korea, had heels as part of their classroom uniform, a decision made since the job they were training for would also require similar footwear. Scientists found that those enrolled in their second and third years of the program showed greater muscle strength in the area surrounding the ankle than the incoming freshmen. But oddly, the upward trend stopped abruptly when the women in their senior year of the program were examined.

04-bright-yellow-high-heels-plaid-skirt-street-style

Even though those were the women who had logged the most hours in their heels, they showed weakening of the same muscles that were becoming stronger in the sophomore and junior classmates. Senior, junior, and sophomore students were all found to have worse balance than the newbies.

The lead in the study, Hanseo University exercise physiology professor Jee Yong-Seok, explained that the ratio of strength between areas on the sides of the ankle to that in the front and the back was off in the heel-wearing women. Per The New York Times, that messes with stability and balance and leads to weakening of the same muscles that were initially becoming stronger due to the heels. In turn, ankle issues can cause injuries stemming from other muscle groups in the legs, including your hamstrings.

Happily for stiletto-lovers, the docs the Times chatted to didn’t suggest abandoning heels. Rather, they said to incorporate basic exercises like calf raises and heel drops (stand on the back edge of a stair and slowly let your heel lower dip down as far as it can). If you wear heels at the office, there’s also a benefit to be gained from slipping them off when you’re sitting at your desk since the position feet are put in while wearing a pair can affect the muscles, even when immobile.

The attention paid to Bryce Dallas Howard’s Jurassic World high-heel running scenes makes the study especially interesting. Though, to be fair, Howard said she prepped for all her action with a lot of calf raises.

Watch Lily James, modern-day Cinderella, discover her perfect pair of heels:
